Limestone Coast West Energy Park
250MW / 1,000MWh Battery Energy Storage Park in South Australia
The Limestone Coast West Energy Park is the second of two new grid-scale co-located battery projects, being developed as part of the Limestone Coast Energy Park, located in regional South Australia. These projects will significantly boost energy storage capacity, enhancing the state’s energy stability and supporting its transition to net-zero emissions.
Strategically located near the 275kV South East Substation, the batteries will store excess renewable energy and discharge it during peak demand when needed. The parks will collectively store up to 60% of South Australia’s residential solar output, preventing an average of 80,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
Key benefits
- Limestone Coast West will make the grid greener by enabling a reduction in thermal energy to approximately 2.5 terawatt hours (TWh) between 2035 and 2060 NEM wide, leading to an estimated reduction in emissions of approximately 1.5 MtCO2e (1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) over the same time frame. This is equivalent to taking around 320,000 passenger vehicles off the road for a year.

Location
The location of the Limestone Coast Energy Park is adjacent to the South East Substation between Peweena Road and Mingbool Road, 10kms outside of Mount Gambier. This site is perfectly situated to connect into established transmission infrastructure with minimal impact on the local landscape, communities, and ecology.
The battery will be made up of single-story modular units similar in size to a shipping container. In total, both facilities will cover approximately 18 hectares of land. The footprint of the energy park will not impact on any other buildings or roads and will not be visible beyond the immediate vicinity of the site.

Building South Australia's energy future
The Limestone Coast Energy Park received Development Approval in August 2024. It is anticipated that Limestone Coast West will commence construction in late 2026.

Network connection
In addition to development approval, a connection agreement with the transmission network operator is required before construction can commence.

Engagement with the surrounding community began in November 2023 and continues as both Limestone Coast projects progress.

Our relationships within communities commence from the early stages of a project through to construction and operations. From the outset we establish open, transparent and collaborative two-way conversations that ensure we are on the ground early to share our project plans, respond to questions and hear ideas the community might have to shape project design. Every community is different, and we value the time people take to engage with us as it helps us shape our projects in a way that suits the differing environments we operate in.
Through our Limestone Coast community engagement session in November 2023, we were provided with an opportunity to share our plans with a cross section of the community. At this session we learned about what mattered to people and answered many questions as we gathered feedback. We look forward to hosting more sessions in the future to continue these important conversations.

During construction of our projects, employment opportunities naturally peak and at these times our approach is to maximise local direct employment and training opportunities.
We prioritise hiring from within the local community to support regional economic development and growth. Where feasible, we will look to support local apprenticeships and education initiatives to support career progression in the renewable energy sector.
Pacific Green held a Supplier Information Session in December 2024 to provide information to local businesses and service providers on potential opportunities on Limestone Coast projects. Pacific Green is proud that most of our workforce on Limestone Coast North are local and this will continue to be a focus as we plan Limestone Coast West.
